MUSEUM PODCASTS
Museum podcasts are nothing new but of course extended closure has meant that many cultural spaces have used podcasts as an alternative way to engage with their audiences.
Here are some to add to your podcast playlist:
Meet me at the Museum produced by Art Fund - a chatty format where well-known faces meet a mate at their favourite museum, Wild Crimes by The Natural History Museum explores illegal wildlife trade, Departures by the Migration Museum takes us through 400 years of emigration from Britain, Smithsonian's Side Door series has been telling unusual stories about their artifacts since 2016, The Sepentine's On Practice gives insight into practices like listening, walking and cooking and finally Southwark Gallery's The Noise of the Mayflower highlights the meaning of noise in a historical context.

[DROP IN AUDIO]
THE POWER OF CONVERSATION
When the drop-in audio app Clubhouse launched earlier this year, it seemed like an unlikely gamble that groups of  strangers would spend time in purely audio conversations in such a visual era. Lockdown and Zoom fatigue have  certainly been a contributing factor, meaning people all over the world were craving the more off-screen serendipitous encounters that have been missing from life recently. It seems that audio is finally entering the social media landscape with Twitter's 'Spaces' and LinkdIn to launch Live Audio Rooms. Dropping into different Clubhouse rooms over recent months has been a bit hit and miss, but when the room is well managed and on-topic it can be quite magical. (Not sure about witnessing a live birth through sound..that was weird)

This drop-in format ins nothing new, Social Broadcasts has been hosting live in-person community 'drop-in' conversations since 2014 as Parallel Radio, with a special 'Remote Radio' season over lockdown very akin to the Clubhouse format, We've finally gathered all the
Parallel Radio shows in one podcast archive

Our sonic environment
The World Soundscape Project created by Canadian R Murray Shafer in the late 60's drew attention to the sonic environment and growing rise of noise pollution, with a focus on paying more attention to the sonic soundscape. This grew into an vast collection of recordings and compositions like the radio series Soundscapes of Canada (listen to an extract here) and multiple sonic research around the world. Cities haven't got any quieter with worrying studies about what this constant noise is doing to our health. For a more contemporary take 99% Invisible's mini series -  Sound and Health exploring sounds of cities and hospitals sounds is worth a listen.

Hunt&Darton's Radio Local

Often partnering with local FM stations and taking over the airwaves for the day, they play with and break the rules of local broadcasting, often giving them some food for thought as to what community radio could be with a little more imagination.
Tour dates: St Helens 29th June, Fleetwood 21st July, Manchester 28th Sept, Peterborough 16th Nov

Pay to play - Audio subscription platforms
As podcasting moves more into the mainstream, could we  be reaching saturation point now that everyone and their nan is releasing their words to the world? Wading through the plethora of podcasts can be overwhelming, so subscription based platforms with guaranteed quality content and individualised recommendations are becoming a more attractive prospect. Amazon's Audible started the trend, the children's platform Pinna is gaining traction and all ears have been pricked towards the recently launched podcast platform Luminary the new 'Netfix' of audio. But does this mean the beginnings of a shift from the wild west of podcasting where big budget productions sit happily alongside bedroom ramblings on the same listening app, to a more sanitised south; following in the footsteps of TV and film where you will have to subscribe to several different platforms to access the podcasts you love?

We've been exploring what inner voices might sound like for an exciting new project. Here are some podcasts that do just that: series 3 of NPR's Invisibilia exploring the invisible forces that shape human behaviour, starts in June as a alternative reality concept album, Here be monsters is an episode by episode trip into the unknown and if that gets too much the Live Awake guided meditations are the perfect antidote.

Anyone into audio has got quite excited about the possibilities of binaural and 3D recording. 3Dio and SR3D are making this relatively accessible with their 'ear' microphones. Here's what something recorded with these mics might sound like, pretty amazing!

How to listen and subscribe to podcasts via a smartphone is still hazy for some, so here are some (free) ways to get addicted: iPhone users - the most simple and effective with a useful sleep timer is Podcasts or the more designed Overcast, Android users can enjoy video and audiobooks with PodcastAddict or keep things simple with PlayerFM which does have a sleep timer. Stitcher and TuneIn serve both phone systems.
